Instant Mom Episode 10

“I had a neighbourhood sister, Jane. She got married to this guy, Ernest. They tried for years but they couldn’t have children and Jane wanted children desperately. It had been her life’s goal to be a wife and a mom. She was a wife but the mom bit was taking a while”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“So, her husband suggested something and that’s where you came in”

“What did he suggest and why did it have to be me?”

“Choosing you was random, honestly. We didn’t stalk you or anything like that”

“Wow thank you for that. It makes me feel so much better” she said sarcastically

“The pleasure is all mine. Anyway, he suggested we get an egg and fertilize it with his sperm and implant it into Jane because, despite the fact that she couldn’t get pregnant, she could actually carry a pregnancy so the problem must have been her eggs.”

“Wow, so, why didn’t he just pay someone to do that?”

“He didn’t want a situation where years down the line the donor would come knocking on their doors for a relationship with the child”

“So, what you’re telling me is that those children are biologically mine?”

“Yes, they are.”

“Oh my God, my mom is going to flip. You do know that what you did was illegal right? Without my consent, you invaded my body.”

“I’m a lawyer and yes I know it’s illegal.”

“Why are you telling me all this after all this time? Don’t tell me you suddenly grew a conscience? And where are the people you did this for? Why aren’t they here?”

“Slow your roll, Missy. I always felt bad about it because the plan was to take you to Jane so she tells you her story and convinces you to part with the eggs as well as getting your memory erased.”

“No one in their right mind was going to allow any of that.”

“That’s what Ernest said and so, when I was talking to you, he snuck behind us and knocked us out.”

“I don’t feel bad for you. And how do I even know it’s true”

“It is. Believe it or not. Ernest and Jane are already dead. Ernest died in an accident two years after the twins were born. And Jane passed recently. She died from cancer.”

“I’m so sorry,” she said kindly

“Thank you,” he said taking note of her softened demeanour

“So, what happens to the children?”

“That’s where you come in. Jane left them in your care.”

“I’m sorry, what?!”

“Same thing I said when she brought it up when it seemed she wasn’t going to win the battle against cancer”

“Why not you?”

“I asked the same thing and she never said anything that made sense”

“Wow, amazing! Ten years ago you turned my life upside down and look at you ten years later still messing with my life.”

“I’m really sorry”

“It’s really not enough. I just got this job and I live with my mom. I am barely trying to survive here. I don’t have the ability to care for them.”

“I know all this, Kara. My private detective did a great job.”

“You had me followed all these years?”

“No, just recently when I started to look for you.”

“Oh okay, that makes it all better,” she said with an eye roll

“How else was I to find you. Jane and the kids were desperate.”

“They know I’m their biological mom?”

“Yes, they do. Jane told them right before she died”

“Great, just great.”

“You don’t have to take them now. You can think about it”

“Of course, I’m going to think about it. I wasn’t taking them now.”

“You can sign off custody over to me if you prefer”

“That is not even an option now.”

“I think that was Jane’s plan”

“Great, just great.”

“This is my contact information. We’re staying at Hotel McRoyale.” he passed her his complementary card

“Okay, thank you”

“I’ll leave now,” he said

“Okay,” she said without taking her eyes off the card and then he walked out.

As soon as he left, Carla and Kitty rushed in.

“What did he say?”

“He said that those are my kids and I have custody of them now”

“What?”

“Carla, can I take the day off?”

“Yeah sure, take the rest of the week off. We’ll handle the events”

“Thanks” she stood up shakily and gave each sister a pat on the shoulder and walked out listlessly

“Can she even drive in this state?” Carla asked

“No, she can’t”

“Order her an uber”

“Yes, ma’am”

A few minutes later, Kara walked out of her office with Kitty trailing behind her.

They got into the elevator.

“I ordered you an uber. You can’t drive like this. You’re going home, right?”

“Nope, I’m going to see my mom”

“Okay, let me change the destination”

They arrived at the entrance to find the car waiting for her.

“Talk to you later, Kay”

“Later, Kit Kat”

And the car pulled off.
