Memory Lane

Letting go isn’t about forgetting; it’s about learning and moving on. It’s making a choice to be strengthened by your past not strangled by it.

So, I have been thinking about forgiveness all morning and it got me thinking about my past and that’s when I took my trip down memory lane. I hate doing that because it reminds me of a part of myself that I really would rather forget.

I bet I’m not the only one who has a past they can’t stand or who hates themselves because of some really bad and poor choices. People say it’s because we really didn’t know better at that time but in my case, I beg to differ. I knew better but I did the bad things anyway. So, when it happens like that, how am I supposed to forgive myself?

I am a Christian and I know God’s grace and mercy has cleared me and my sins are forgiven in God’s eyes but I struggle every day with forgiving myself for all the bad decisions I made. But then I saw a quote that said, “The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power” and I thought, “Wow, that’s so true”.

We all have some sort of past that we are unbelievably ashamed of and I think that letting it go would be hard but that’s what we need to do if we want our future to be better than our past. I also know that it’s not enough to just know better but we need to do better. The doing better part is quite tricky but we have a Helper called the Holy Spirit who would come to our aid when our flesh wants to lead us astray. We need to relay use this Helper so that we can stop making choices our future selves would be ashamed of.

(Side note: This post has taken a completely different turn.)

Lately, I am being confronted with some of my choices and it’s hard out here but I have come to know that I am not the same person I was back then. Each day, we change and learn something new that makes us beat ourselves for what we have done when we didn’t know better.

My message is pretty simple;

  1. You are not who you were when you did those things.
  2. Don’t let your past mistakes define you.
  3. You can learn from your mistakes and do better next time
  4. The grace of God is sufficient and so, you need not wait to be perfect before approaching God. You can go just as you are and He’ll do the rest.
  5. Regardless of what you have done and what you think you deserve; God truly loves you and thinks you’re to die for.

Thank you for reading and stay blessed.
